About The Debate
The Union societies in Oxford and Cambridge Universities are two of the most famous and prestigious debating societies in the world. The Unions have debated all sorts of topics – most are provocative and controversial, some are light-hearted and witty – and have featured some of the most prominent figures in history.

In the tradition of the University Unions, The Oxford and Cambridge Society of Malaysia is reviving the Oxford Vs Cambridge Debate this year, featuring current Oxford and Cambridge students as well as members of the ESU Malaysia World Student Debate Team 2007. This Debate is an impromptu one so that our perceived bright speakers will think on their feet. The actual debate motion and sides will be selected by coin tosses, less than an hour before the debate commences. The motions chosen this year “This House Believes that Security Measures are Justified at the Expense of Civil Liberties" and “This House Believes that the Medium of Instruction in Schools Should be English” are capable of generating heat, light and controversy. However the crux of the event (as seriously as we like to take ourselves, this is just a Debate!) is the healthy exchange of ideas and a display of high-powered English and public-speaking skill. In fact participation is encouraged or even expected from the floor (also regarded as the “members of the house”) during the debate, where members of the floor can interrupt on points of information (POI). You can refer to “The Rules and Etiquette of the Debate” for further information.

The Oxford Vs Cambridge Debate 2007 will be held at Sunway University College on the 8th of September, and will be opened to interested members of the public FREE OF CHARGE. Please register below to confirm your attendance. For further information, you may contact yychook@oxbridgemalaysia.com .

This Debate is kindly sponsored by Sunway University College and Deloitte Malaysia, with the cooperation of JobStreet.com.

About the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Malaysia
The Oxford and Cambridge Society of Malaysia was registered on 11 January 1960, at the initiative of the late Tun Sir Henry H S Lee. The Society was founded to promote and facilitate social, recreational and cultural activities between past and present members of the Universities, to further causes and projects in the interests of the members, and to hold an annual Boat Race Dinner on the eve of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.

True to the objects of the Society, the Society has organised annual Boat Race Dinners, debates, dinner and luncheon talks and numerous other events. The Society has played host to many distinguished guests and dignitaries, including our Prime Minister and the Vice-Chancellors of the Universities..
